Essential Rabbit Care: Teeth, Grooming & Vaccinations

Rabbits may be small, but caring for them takes big dedication. From dental health to grooming and vaccinations, here are three essential areas every bunny parent should stay on top of to keep their rabbit happy and healthy.

🦷 Dental Health:

Rabbit teeth never stop growing. While this is completely normal, a poor diet or lack of chewing opportunities can lead to painful dental problems that often go unnoticed until they’re severe.

Watch for these subtle signs of dental issues:
• Drooling or a wet chin
• Weight loss or reluctance to eat
• Preference for soft food
• Tear-stained fur or eye discharge
• Lethargy or behaviour changes

Support healthy teeth naturally:
• Unlimited hay (the #1 way to wear teeth down)
• Safe wooden chews and foraging toys
• Dried forage & root chews e.g dandelion root
• Regular vet checkups to monitor tooth alignment

🧼 Grooming:

Rabbits groom themselves frequently, but they still need your help, especially during moulting seasons. Swallowed fur can lead to serious digestive issues like GI stasis.

Why grooming matters:
• Prevents fur blockages
• Lowers risk of GI problems from swallowed hair
• Lets you spot hidden issues like lumps or parasites

What to do:
• Brush weekly (or more during shedding)
• Check nails, ears, and bottoms often
• Spot-clean with a damp cloth if absolutely necessary - never bathe your rabbit!

Tip: Forage mixes and high-fibre treats like fibre sticks can support digestion during heavy shedding.

💉 Vaccinations: A Must for Every Rabbit

Vaccinations aren’t optional—they’re vital. Deadly diseases like Myxomatosis and Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (RVHD-1 & RVHD-2) can strike even indoor rabbits through insect bites, contaminated hay, or contact with shoes and other pets.

Protect your rabbit with:
• Annual combined vaccine (covers all 3 viruses)
• First dose at 6–12 weeks of age
• Boosters every year for lifelong prevention
• Routine vet visits to catch other health issues early

Staying on top of dental care, grooming, and vaccinations gives your rabbit the best chance at a long, healthy, and joyful life. A little effort goes a long way when it comes to our fluffy companions!
